This method is for the determination of aromatic and halogenated volatile organic compounds in nearly all types of solid and waste matrices including casustic liquors, acid liquors, waste solvents, oily wastes, mousses, tars, fibrous wastes, polymeric emulsions, filters cakes, spent carbons, spent catalysts, soils and sediments. Sample preparation is made by using the appropriate SW-846 method (3000 series).
Analysis is performed using a gas chromatograph (GC) with a photoionization detector (PID) and an electrolyitc conductivity detector (ECD) in series.
A single detector may be used when only the halogenated compounds (ECD) or aromatic compounds (PID) are being searched for. The use of the dual detectors is not required but is recommended for confirmation of the compound identities.
The detection limits achieved for this method will vary with the purging efficiencies of the compounds from the sample matrices.
NOTE: This method replaces SW-846 Methods 8021 and 8021A.
