Method ID-196

Carbon Black in Workplace Atmospheres

This method is for the collection and analysis of carbon black from workplace air.  The sample is collected on a pre-weighed 37mm low-ash polyvinyl chloride (PVC) filter.  After collection, the filter is gravimetrically screened for carbon blank.  If the result is greated than the OSHA PEL (3.5 mg/m3), further processing is needed.  The filter is dissolved in tetrahydrofuran (THF) and the residue is redeposited on a THF-rinsed quartz fiber filter.  The quartz filter is heated at 150°C, cooled, and then weighed.  The filters are then reheated at 600°C and cooled and reweighed.  The weight loss after heating at 600°C is reported as carbon black.

NOTE:  This is a partially validated method.
