This method is for the determination of furfural. The sample is collected on XAD-2 sorbent tubes coated with 2-(hydroxymethyl)piperidine (2-HMP), desorbed with toluene followed by ultrasonication, and analyzed by GC/FID. The working range is 0.3 to 5.5 ppm (1.3 to 22 mg/m³) for a 12 L air sample. The method is suitable for the simultaneous determination of furfural and glutaraldehyde. Furfural reacts with 2-HMP to form a derivative during sampling. The sampling rate is limited by the speed of the derivitization reaction. Sampling rates greater than 0.05 L/min. may cause breakthrough due to an imcomplete reaction. NOTE: Method S17 is an alternate, less sensitive method for furfural, which uses bubbler collection and derivitization with Girard T reagent.

* The analytes and detection limits listed for each method represent the typical detection limits and analytes reported for that particular method. Keep in mind that analyte lists may vary from laboratory to laboratory. Detection limits may also vary from lab to lab and are dependent upon the sample size, matrix, and any interferences that may be present in the sample.
