Method 16

Semicontinuous Determination of Sulfur Emissions (Total Reduced Sulfur Compounds) from Stationary Sources

This method is applicable for the determination of emissions of  Total Reduced Sulfur Compounds (TRS) from recovery furnaces, lime kilns, and smelt dissolving tanks at kraft pulp mills and fuel gas combustion devices at petroleum refineries.  Samples are analyzed using a GC/FPD (flame photometric detector).

Sulfur  reacts with metal and can bias results, therefore, all components of the sampling train need to be Teflon or Teflon lined.  Components of the sampling train include a probe, filter, and three SO2 scrubbers (impingers) in series.  The first two impingers are filled with a citrate buffer and the third left empty the solutions should be replaced after each run.  These scrubbers are important as they remove SO2 from the gas.  Large amounts of SO can interfere with the analysis as SO2 elutes near the target compounds making a chromatographic separation difficult.

The method calls for concurrent collection and analysis meaning the sample gas is passed through the scrubbers and directed onto the GC/FPD for analysis.  However for non-compliance work, it is not uncommon for samples to be collected in a canister or Tedlar bag and submitted to a laboratory for analysis.  It is recommended that samples collected in a canister or Tedlar bag be analyzed as soon as possible.
