This method is for the determination of volatile organic (VO) concentration of a waste sample. A sample of waste is taken from representative location of the unexposed waste (where the waste has had minimum opportunity to volatilize to the atmosphere). The sample is suspended in an organic/aqueous matrix, heated and purged with nitrogen for 30 minutes. An aliquote of the sample is analyzed for carbon concentration, as methane, using GC/FID (gas chromatography/flame ionization detector). Another aliquot of the sample is analyzed for chlorine concentration, as chloride, using GC/ELCD (gas chromatography/electrolytic conductivity detector). The VO concentration is the sum of the carbon and chlorine content of the sample.
The sample is collected in polyethylene glycol (PEG) that has been cleaned and stored under a nitrogen purge until used for sampling. PEG reduces the loss of organics during the sampling procedure. 30mL of PEG is placed into a pre-weighed 40mL glass vial. The sampling tip is placed below the surface of the waste and connected to the sample vial via Teflon tubing. The vial is filled to the top to minimize headspace and put on ice.
At the laboratory, the vial is weighed again and then analyzed using GC/FID and GC/ELCD. An audit sample is required if the data are to be used for compliance purposes.
No Obligation Quotation for Analytical Services
If you would like us to provide a quote for laboratory analysis, just provide us with as much information as you can about your project (the more, the better) and we'll provide you a quote via email. As you are searching or browsing our Analytical Guide, you'll see the Request-A-Quote icon... just click on it to start the request process.
