This method is for the determination of inorganic anions (chloride, fluoride, bromide, nitrate, nitrite, phosphate, and sulfate) in water samples. Water samples are collected by grab sampling and analyzed by ion chromatography with electroconductivity detection. Interferences with this method include any ions that have the same retention time as the ions of interest. Additionally, large quantitites of ions eluting in close proximity to each other will result in an interference. In such cases, it may be acceptable to dilute the sample. Bromide and nitrate are known to elute closely to each other.
If the sample contains particulate matter greater than 45um, the sample will need to be filtered. The method calls for the analysis of a sample duplicate every 1 in 10 samples and a matrix spike sample with every sample batch or 1 in every 20, whichever is more frequent.
This method can also be used to analyze solid samples by using a bomb combustion to convert the sample to an aqueous form. The sample is then analyzed in the same manner as a water sample.

* The analytes and detection limits listed for each method represent the typical detection limits and analytes reported for that particular method. Keep in mind that analyte lists may vary from laboratory to laboratory. Detection limits may also vary from lab to lab and are dependent upon the sample size, matrix, and any interferences that may be present in the sample.
