Method 8270D Solids

Semivolatile Organic Compounds by Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS)

Method 8270D is for the determination of semivolatile organic compounds (SVOCs) in extracts prepared from many types of solid waste matrices and soil samples.  Method 8270D can be used to quantitate most neutral, acidic, and basic compounds that are soluble in methylene chloride and capable of being eluted, without derivitization, as sharp peaks from a gas chromatographic fused-silica capillary column coated with a slightly polar silicone.  Such compounds include polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), chlorinated hydrocarbons and pesticides, phthalate esters, organophosphate esters, nitrosamines, haloethanes, aldehydes, ethers, ketones, anilines, pyridines, quinolines, aromatic nitro compounds, and phenols including nitrophenols.  SVOCs are more broadly characterized by those compounds having a boiling point above 100°C.

A variety of sample preparation techniques may be used to prepare the sample prior to analysis including solid-phase and sonication (Method 3500).  Sample cleanup procedures (Method 3600) may also be used if necessary.

In most cases the method is not appropriate for the quantitation of multicomponent analytes, e.g., Aroclors, Toxaphene, Chlordane, etc., because of limited sensitivity for those analytes.  However, this method is appropriate for use as a confirmation,  if the concentration is high enough,  if identified by a GC method.

This method replaces methods 8270, 8270A, 8270B and 8270C.
