Method D-1945

Standard Method for Analysis of Natural Gas by GC (Fixed Gases)

This method is designed to determine the chemical composition of natural gases and similar gaseous mixtures by GC-FID (flame ionization detector).  This method is also commonly referred to as the fixed gas method.  H2, O2, N2, CH4, CO, CO2, ethane, ethylene, also known as atmospheric gases, can be determined by this method along with C1-C6 hydrocarbons  Typical detection limits are 1ppm.

Tedlar bags and Summa cans are most commonly used for sample collection.  However, fixed gases are  often determined in ground water samples and leachates from landfills.

This method is closely related to ASTM D1946 (chemical composition of reformed gas) also referred to as a fixed gas method.

* The analytes and detection limits listed for each method represent the typical detection limits and analytes reported for that particular method. Keep in mind that analyte lists may vary from laboratory to laboratory. Detection limits may also vary from lab to lab and are dependent upon the sample size, matrix, and any interferences that may be present in the sample.
