Method 104

Determination of Beryllium From Stationary Sources

This method is for the determination of beryllium from ducts and stacks of stationary sources.  The method is not intended to apply to gas streams other than those emitted directly to the atmosphere without further processing.

Samples are collected isokinetically from a source on a glass fiber filter (Millipore AA or equivalent is recommended) and water.  A Method 5 train consisting of a heated probe, heated filter, and series of impingers is used to collect the sample.  The first two impingers are filled with 100mL of water, the third impinger is left empty, and the fourth impinger is filled with 200-300g of silica gel.  The method recommends collecting sample for a minimum of 2 hours.

Once the sample has been collected, the filter is removed and placed in a petri dish.  If it is necessary to fold the filter, make sure the PM is on the inside of the fold.  This is container 1.  Container 2 consists of the contents of Impingers 1-3 after determining the volume to the nearest 1mL.  A D.I. water rinse is performed of the probe, filter holder, glassware connecting the filter holder to the back half of the 3rd impinger.  This rinse is repeated using acetone.  The water and acetone rinses are added to Container 2.

The silica gel is weighed to later determine the moisture content of the stack gas.

The filter is digested with HNO3.  The rinse/impinger contents are evaporated then digested with HNO3.  The residues from the filter and the rinses/impinger contents are combined for one analysis.  The method recommends the use of flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry.  However, most labs now substitute analysis by ICP or ICP/MS to achieve better detection limits and have less problem with interferences.
