EPA Method 8: Determination of Sulfuric Acid and Sulfur Dioxide Emissions from Stationary Sources

The Environmental Supply Method 8 sampling system is for the determination of H2SO4 (including H2SO4 mist and SO3) and gaseous SO2 emissions from stationary sources. Method 8 is an isokinetic method which requires a Method 5 sampling train. The filter position is in between the 1st and 2nd impingers and the filter holder does not have to be heated. Filterable particulate matter may be determined along with H2SO4 and SO2 (subject to the approval of the Regulatory Administrator) by inserting a heated glass fiber filter between the probe and isopropanol impinger. If this option is chosen, particulate analysis is gravimetric only; sulfuric acid is not determined separately. Sample collection time is 1hour.

Although there are many different variations of train configurations, the component list below is a basic system with the 2" filter assembly pictured below as the main distinguishing feature apart from a basic Method 5 train:

The C-5000 Series consists of: 10” Dual inclined manometer with 1” incline and brass shutoff valves, manometer solenoid valves for on-the-fly zeroing capability, solid state temperature controllers for probe and filter, 7-station thermocouple selector switch, LED temperature readout, amphenol 4-pin fused power delivery, power-pump-timer-null-orsat power switch controls, brass valves and 1/2" QC sample inlet, 3/8" QC pitot inlets, 1/4" QC Orsat Inlet and pump connections.
